Ice skating for free to celebrate 100 year jubilee

The Vienna iceskating club is celebrating 100 years of iceskating on the world's biggest inner city ice rink with a 5 day free entry for skaters.

The club that has been particularly successful in iceskating, racing on the ice and with ice hockey also manages the 6000 m² ice rink on the Heumarkt in Vienna.

The 100th year jubilee will be celebrated on 25 October .

As well as an ice skating display there will also be live music and a demonstration by the ice hockey kids and the ice racing club.

Historic photos of the ice rink will also be on display on a giant projecter and some of the regulars at the rink will be turning up in period costume to remind visitors of times gone by.

And once the presentations are finished iceskating for everybody is on offer – with those less sure on their feet allow the opportunity to try some of the other ice-based sports such as curling .

The free entry is on offer between 22 October and 26 October.

The organisation was officially founded in 1867 and in 1909 organise the opening of the Engelmann ice rink in Hernals, followed shortly on the 18 December 1912 with the second Vienna ice rink that was equipped with with 4000 m² of space – which because of the enormous popularity was quickly increased to the current 6,000 square metres.

The ice rink is currently the largest in the world which is based inside the city and every year attracts over quarter of 1,000,000 visitors .
