The Viennese zoo Schoenbrunn now offers a new voucher to explore the elephant house "behind the scenes". It will be possible to watch an elephant in a training session and learn more about the huge animals.
"We want to give people an insight to the elephant park ,which is usually only accessible to animal keepers", said the Director of the zoo, Dagmar Schratter.
"Up to now we have been offering vouchers to visit the Katta lemurs or the rhinos. The visitors have been very enthusiastic after their adventures."
The exclusive guided tour takes 1,5 hours and can only be experienced by two persons.
Visitors get direct information from the animal keepers. For example they will learn that a grown elephant needs about 200 kilos of food every day or that the elephant baby Tuluba weighed 112 kilos after its birth.
It is not possible to have direct contact with an elephant but visitors can experience a live training session of the huge animals.
"It is fascinating to observe how elephants present their legs and ears when they are tempted with treats. All of that is very important for their body and skin care and for their health", said Ms Schratter.
The voucher costs 250 Euros for two persons and can be booked every second and fourth Wednesday of the month.
