For one night each winter, the Waldorf Astoria in New York is transported back to Vienna’s imperial heyday, complete with the clip-clop of live horses and a procession of white-gloved debutantes and escorts.
There, in the Grand Ballroom, guests at the Viennese Opera Ball are treated to Austria’s cultural and culinary delights, highlighted by the Viennese Waltz, Midnight Quadrille, and thrilling operatic interlude.
New York has been the home to the Viennese Opera Ball, a white tie charity gala, drawing an international audience including Diplomats, Dignitaries and Debutantes, for nearly 60 years.
This year guests can enjoy the music of Peter Duchin conducting a 22-piece Orchestra and continue to travel back in time as principal dancers from The Vienna State Ballet open the Ball with a breathtaking pas de deux - and return to perform with marionettes (courtesy Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre) and opera singers (courtesy Metropolitan Opera) during an adaptation of Austrian composer Josef Haydn’s "Die Feuersbrunst" ("The Burning House").
The celebrated baritone Sherrill Milnes will co-host with ABC-TV’s "Dancing with the Stars" current Mirror Ball Trophy winner, Tony Dovolani.
The 58th Annual Viennese Opera Ball (VOB), under the auspices of the US-Austrian Chamber of Commerce, will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013, at the Waldorf=Astoria in New York City.
Long considered the most prestigious Viennese Opera Ball outside of Vienna, the Ball is a nonprofit association benefiting other worthy nonprofit institutions.
The 2013 Viennese Opera Ball will benefit Carnegie Hall, which has a rich history of more than 120 years of concerts featuring Viennese artists and works by Viennese composers.
