Last Chance to see “The Beauty of Japanese Printing“ in Vienna

The 300-year-old tradition of Japanese woodblock printing is now on display in Vienna.

To create a picture, Japanese moku hanga artists use elaborate techniques of carving metal, stone plate, wood or stencilling a silk screen.

This art form reached its golden age in the Edo-Period of 1603 – 1868 as "Ukiyo-e." Today, the tradition lives on through a handful of skilled artists who beautifully combine traditional techniques with contemporary motifs.

You can see this craftsmanship firsthand at a special exhibit in Vienna.  M&N Home Furnishing presents this free exhibition at the Japan Information and Cultural Centre at the Embassy of Japan.

M&N owner Margaret Furuta, says the exhibit promotes the works of eight outstanding HANGA artists who utilise three different techniques: woodblock, silkscreen and mezzotint.

Furuta hopes the exhibit will spark new interest in this beautiful art form.

Each Hanga print represents a picture meticulously carved by the artist and printed on traditional Japanese paper. Classic woodblock print motifs typically depict Japanese symbols such as Fuji Yama, Sumo wrestlers or Geishas. Modern Hanga depict nature, architecture and people.

The examples in the M&N collection include pieces created after the Great Earthquake of 2011, and symbolize victory of life over death and destruction. To learn more about this unique art you must hurry because the exhibit ends this Friday.

Exhibition: Thru November 30 (till 3.30 p.m.), 2012
