The famous New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic that is broadcast around the world to 50 million people in 73 countries will be staged at two venues this year.
The celebrations in the Austrian capital will feature a concert by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the Musikverein in the heart of the capital and a ballet performance at Schloss Hof, which is situated close to the Slovakian border and has been added to this year’s programme to commemorate the 350th birthday of its early inhabitant - Prince Eugene of Savoy.
He was one of the most successful military commanders in modern European history, rising to the highest offices of state at the Imperial court in Vienna.
The ballet at Schloss Hof has been choreographed by the director of the Scottish Ballet Ashley Page for the first time and the costumes have been designed by Johan Engels for the sixth time.
Under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst who conducted last year’s concert, the Philharmonic will perform pieces by the Strauss family, Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner – though it is not known which pieces these will be.
The concert interlude will feature a short film called "Honeymoon" which has been directed by Patrick Pleisnitzer and tells the story of a young couple taking their honeymoon in Lower Austria.
In total 13 cameras will be used to cover the event including the newly introduced flying Camcat to ensure the best possible production.
The demand for tickets is so high that people have to preregister one year in advance in order to participate in the drawing of tickets for the following year. Some seats are preregistered by some Austrian families and passed down from generation to generation.
