Schanigarten awards for the best garden eateries

In the heart of the city, green space is always appreciated and that is just as true for restaurants that have the opportunity to let guests enjoy their food in the open air.

Many of the owners' gastronomical establishments offer the opportunity to relax outside in what are known locally as Schanigarten - named after the Schani that used to bring the food.

Every year the Vienna Chamber of Commerce holds the "Goldener Schani" contest to decide which of these many gardens is the best.

More than 120 took part and took the opportunity to show off their garden areas that are available to guests.

The winner in the category of the most beautiful classical Schanigarten was won by the restaurant "Patara - Fine Thai Cuisine" (1010, Petersplatz 1).

In the category for the best green Schanigarten  the winner was the Weinhof Zimmermann (1190, Mitterwurzergasse 20).

And in the category hidden treasure the Gastgarten of the hotel Hotel "Das Triest" (1040, Wiedner Hauptstraße 12) was the clear winner.

Vienna Chamber of Commerce president Brigitte Jank said: "In total Vienna has over 2,000 Schanigarten that are a valuable part of the city's image in the summer months."
