Varied plays at the Volkstheater

The Volkstheater Vienna currently offers a wide spectrum of plays ranging from a legendary musical drama to a popular farce.

"Jagdszenen aus Niederbayern" by Martin Sperr recently premiered at the Volkstheater, one of Austria’s most popular theatres. The theatre is situated in Neubau district, just over the road from the Museumsquartier (MQ) and within walking distance of popular shopping streets like Mariahilfer Straße, Neubaugasse and Kirchengasse.

The whole "Jagdszenen aus Niederbayern" cast’s performances received unanimous acclaim by the audience and critics while some decisions by director Schirin Khodadadian were criticised in reviews published in the Kurier, Die Presse and other dailies. "Jagdszenen aus Niederbayern" portrays the rough life in a Bavarian village after the war. Claudia Sabitzer, Simon Mantei and former Schauspielhaus Zurich actor Günter Franzmeier – the stars of the Volkstheater’s current "Der einsame Weg" stage production – are performing in "Jagdszenen aus Niederbayern".

"Die Dreigroschenoper" (The Threepenny Opera), the famous musical drama by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill is currently on at the Volkstheater as well. "Mackie Messer" Marcello de Nardo, Katharina Straßer and Andrea Bröderbauer not only prove to be excellent actors but also singers. Michael Schottenberg, the creative director of the Volkstheater, directs the musical drama which has been performed across the world since its premiere in Berlin, Germany, in 1928.

A German version of Ray Cooney’s hilarious farce "Out of Order" will be staged at the Volkstheater on 26 March. The play was featured in the theatre’s programme for the first time in 2009. Now the Volkstheater decided to get it back on due to immense public demand. Erich Schleyer and Till Firit can be seen in leading roles in the play from 1991.

Immigration drama "Die Reise" and "Mondlicht und Magnolien" (Moonlight and Magnolias), a comedy by Ron Hutchinson starring Thomas Kamper and Christoph F. Krutzler, will also be performed at the Volkstheater in the coming weeks.
