Toilet kingdoms fall on account of the financial crisis

The Karlplatz toilet kingdoms have begun to fall victim to the financial crisis. The toilets installed by a group of artists in Vienna began to fall on Wednesday night and only seven were left standing by the end of Thursday.

Toilets on the south side of the square in front of Karlskirche lost their AAA rating particularly quickly on account of strong winds. International artists Christoph Mayers and Cosima Reifs have already watched their states fall.

Almost 10 days ago several artists declared independence for 25 toilets put up in Karlsplatz in Vienna using the 3 foot square interior to build their own mini kingdoms.

The monetary crisis which began shortly after their installation was caused, they say, by a terrorist who broke into one of the toilets overnight and left an "unauthorised deposit" in the toilet bowl, which lead to the gradual economic downfall of the 3x3 metre states.

Spokesman for the group "One Metre Squared States" said that some were traditional monarchies, others inhabited by rats and another was an "erotic dictatorship".

They have all also formed an alliance modelled on the EU under the name UMO - standing for United Microartnation Organisation.

Each toilet state has its own constitution, passports and visa requirements for non UMO members.

In honour of the toilet corpses that have been left scattered across Karlplatz, the artists have extended an invitation to an event of national bankruptcy on carnival Monday in the foyer of the Künstlerhaus museum. This will be the very last chance for visitors to gain a visa and entry to one of the kingdoms.

The event will take place on 20 February between midday and 1pm.
