Train collides with car: woman injured

A 73-year-old driver got stuck with his car when he was crossing the rail tracks in Höflein, Lower Austria yesterday (Wed). His wife on the front seat was not able to free herself before the train arrived and the car was carried along for 30 metres.

The car slipped on the steep road in front of the train crossing. The front wheels got caught in the snow between the tracks when the gates closed.

The man desperately tried to get his 73-year-old wife out of the car, said Franz Resperger from the provincial fire brigade.

"According to the police, the man tried to signal the train to stop. At the same time he wanted to free his wife from the belt but did not succeed. The train arrived within few seconds and collided sideways with the car.

The car was carried along for 30 metres. The woman from Vienna was severely injured and taken to hospital whilst her husband was in shock.

The passengers of the train remained unharmed. They had to leave the train and could warm themselves in the house of the firebrigade in Höflein.
