Residents fight against housing project

Plans to replace the Cineplexx building at Reichsbrücke in Kaisermühlen, Vienna, with a 150-metre apartment tower are hotly debated. Residents are fighting against the project "Danube Flats" because they fear negative consequences for the existing buildings.

Residents of Seidler-Tower fear that there will not be enough distance of their apartment tower to the planned building. This would not only cause fall wind but also a lot of shade, said Irmgard Taibl, a member of citizens' initiative "Initiative Kaisermühlen".

"Residents from the 9th floor, who bought an apartment in 2002, were then assured by the City of Vienna that the apartment construction in the area had been terminated."

On the basis of the land use, only buildings with a maximum height of 26 metres are permitted. The building of the "Danube Flats" would, however, be 150 metres high.

Residents fear that the rededication has already been implemented without their integration.

"How is it possible to present something to be rededicated, when this is not the case? Two days after the competition of architects, the planned tower briefly appeared at the website of the City of Vienna as a new symbol.", Taibl said.

The Soravia Group applied for a rededication to implement their project. The process has not started yet. The Group wants to build 45 floor areas with 500 privately owned apartments and investment apartments as well as apartments for people with low-income. The Soravia Group is also planning facilities of infrastructure such as a supermarket, a kindergarten, a cafe etc.

The citizens' initiative wants to bring clarity to the issue in today’s (Mon) debate, where politicians from different parties will attend.
