Runners caught short in Vienna Indoor Marathon

Marathon runners who thought they'd clocked up record times were caught short when organisers confessed that the course wasn't long enough.

Results from the race in Vienna, Austria, which took place on Sunday were scrapped when officials discovered they had chopped 1.8km off the standard marathon route.

Many of the 850 runners had achieved what they thought were personal bests and were celebrating before they found that the course was inaccurate.

Organisers had staged the indoor race on a specially designed course inside two huge halls in the city's convention centre.

The organizers had advertised the event as offering "Zero incline or descent, no wind and a constant temperature of 15 degrees Celsius allowing for personal best performance."

Instead of running the standard marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers (26.2 miles), runners clocked just 40.435 kilometers.

"We are sorry we didn't get this right. It was a good race, it just ended too early," said a spokesman.

At first organizers denied the first rumours that the course had been too short, but later admitted  there had been "a small problem" with their measurements.

They said the changes had been made for safety reasons - meaning each lap was shortened by 110 metres.

Organisers assured participants that the mistake will not be made next year and extra checks will be made.
