Entrepreneurs unauthorised bank credit

A Romanian builder has been jailed for 10 years after he was refused a young entrepreneur loan to start a new business, but then came back later and terrorised a bank clerk into opening the safe so he could make an unauthorised 250,000 GBP withdrawal.

According to prosecutors in Wiener Neustadt south of the capital Vienna, Wasilica Balcescu, now aged 37, had then fled back to Romania where he used the money to start up what is now a successful building firm.

But DNA taken from a mask found near the bank in Leobersdorf in Lower Austria was later put into a European database which identified him, and an arrest warrant was issued.

He denies the charges but was convicted after the judge ruled that his defence that the evidence against him was a "coincidence".

Sentencing judge Birgit Borns said: "If this was a coincidence, then it was coincidentally the most coincidental of all coincidences."
