Vienna school children fall below education standards

According to the results of the latest Austrian wide education tests Vienna's pupils fail to meet required standards in mathematics.

Half of the school pupils in Vienna fail to meet the required education standard in mathematics.

School pupils in the eighth grade averaged at 517 points ranking Vienna bottom of the rankings.

Pupils in Upper Austria scored best with 548 points.

According to the authors of the tests the reason for the low score in Vienna are the Hauptschule - the secondary schools.

At these schools 51 per cent of pupils fail to meet the required education standard.

The Education Board President Susanne Brandsteidl from the SPÖ was unhappy with these results presented today (Tues) but said they were expected in the Austrian capital due to the high proportion of immigrants in the capital's schools.

Brandsteidl is calling for children who do not get assistance at home to spend more time at school. She is calling for more free whole day schools in the city.

Brandsteidl is also calling for more lessons for school children per week.

As part of the study around 80.000 pupils from the fourth class from the Hauptschule, Mittelschule and the AHS were tested in mathematics and the results were compared.
