German police have shot dead an Austrian woman's pit bull that was running wild after it attacked another dog and bit the dog's owner.
The woman from Vienna was in Monheim in the German region of Nordrhein-Westfalen when the dog ran out from the house where the woman was staying when she opened the door.
The pitbull attacked a Labrador and then bit the Labrador's owner on the hand when she tried to rescue her dog. A passerby called police after failing to separate the two animals and German police solved the problem by shooting the pitbull.
A police spokesman said that they had first tried pepper spray and because this had not worked and because the was a school in the area they had decided to put the dog out of action.
Criminal charges are now being prepared against the owner of the pitbull. The 46-year-old Labrador owner that was bitten on the hand was ordered to stay in hospital due to the severity of the bite wound. The Labrador dog is out of danger after treatment by a vet.
