Bus drivers targetted in traffic clamp down in Vienna
City council officials and police in Vienna are getting ready for tackling traffic chaos as a massive increase in visitors is expected because of the Christmas markets.
In particular there is a crackdown on tourist buses with only those who have managed to gain an official permit allowed into the inner city.
The permits are available online and 300 are issued per day with reportedly all of the permits already issued. Bus drivers without a permit are not permitted into the inner city or in the districts of Mariahilf, Neubau, Josefstadt and Alsergrund between 6.00 and 20.00.
Only buses which are displaying one of the permits are granted an exception. The rest are being diverted to the suburban car parks such as the one being set up outside the Ernst Happel-Stadium.
But not just bus drivers are affected – car drivers are also being targeted with particular focus on illegal parkers in the Advent period. Not just parking fines but also tow vehicles are being used to keep the traffic flowing.
