Crook leaves DNA daughter behind

DNA evidence doesn't come much clearer than a case in Austria this week when a thief left his daughter behind after fleeing from store detectives in the western city of Innsbruck.

Slovak shoplifter Jan Kolousek, 37, fled empty-handed leaving behind not only his stolen goods but also his 11-year-old daughter who he had been using to make him seem less suspicious.

The thief and a male accomplice were collared by store detectives but when police arrived Kolousek fled – leaving his tearful daughter abandoned.

The child was taken into care and Austrian officials say they have now traced the mother who can however only come to pick the girl up next week on Monday.

Police spokesman Elmar Rizzoli said: "The girl was in shock and cried a lot at first but she is in good hands and we will be moving her to Vienna so that her mother can collect her on Monday."

The girl's dad is still on the run although his accomplice is currently in custody.
