Man shot himself with illegal gun

A foolish Austrian who hoped to show off to pals that he was a tough guy after buying a pistol in a pub shot himself in the leg as he was walking home in Vienna.

The 35-year-old wanted to use the gun to impress pals but ended up lying on the ground in agony after the point-blank range bullet severed a major blood vessel in his leg.

He refused to tell police what had happened and there was a full-scale investigation in a bid to catch the attacker.

But detectives eventually pieced together the full story after finding the gun had been in the man's pocket when it went off on the city's Breitenfurter Straße in the Liesing district.

Police spokesman Roman Hahslinger said he now faces illegal weapons charges related to possession of the illegal gun.
