Monkey business is good for business

A giant concrete flack tower built by the Third Reich and turned into a museum has been pulling in the crowds since it added a new attraction – monkeys.

The primates are given free range to run through all the floors of Vienna's Aqua Zoo the Haus des Meeres in the centre of the city that was built with steel reinforced concrete.

After the war engineers realised it was too well built to knock down and it lay derelict for decades before the plan was hatched to fill part of it with water and use it as a giant aquarium.

Since then it has been a popular tourist attraction on the busy Mariahilferstrasse shopping street - but the real hit has been the decision to allow monkeys to become part of the business.

Carers who released pictures of the baby marmosets today said the babies were born a few weeks ago and have the free range of building, and were not shy of visitors – often going up to guests.

The marmoset originally lived on the Northeastern coast of Brazil but through release of captive individuals, it has expanded its range since the 1920s to Southeast Brazil.
