Artificially inseminated elephant to be born in Vienna in world premier

The first ever elephant to be artificially inseminated by frozen sperm is expecting a baby at Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna, Austria scans have revealed.

In the first successful attempt of its kind an African elephant at Vienna Zoo was  impregnated by the semen from an elephant living in the wild in South Africa in November 2011.

Tonga, a 26-year-old elephant at the zoo is now in the ninth month of pregnancy according to ultra sound scans at the zoo.

The scan - taken in April - shows the foetus is just over 10.6cm long. Experts say it now measures around 20cm.

This revolutionary technology offers new hope that endangered animals can be bread in zoos.

Experts believe that if the technique is successful it will inject massive new gene pools into world wide captive breeding programmes.

Schönbrunn zoo has worked together with the Berlin Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wild Animal Research on the artificial insemination of elephants.

Elephants are pregnant for 22 months.
