Women dead in Vienna council flat for two years

Officials in Vienna have ordered an enquiry after a women lay dead in an armchair at her council owned flat for over two years before her body was found.

Police say they have no idea why neighbours had not complained about the smell from the body of 49-year-old German named only as Karin van S., or why none of her friends or family reported her missing.

The local council had sent bailiffs to evict the woman because her rent had not been paid for more than two years.

The officials found her flat in the Josef Schwarz-Gasse in the Margarethen district full of garbage and her body decayed for obviously a long time.

Town officials had initiated the eviction in June 2011 but due to red tape it was not before this week that it was to be executed.

The woman had allegedly de-registered from the flat but that went unnoticed by town officials. First investigations indicated that the woman had no close relatives and an alcohol problem.

A post-mortem has been requested but police are unable to say when its results are to be expected.
