Horror crash driver was driving to doctors at time of crash

The driver of the car which smashed into a line of queuing traffic in the Vienna Donaustadt district yesterday killing himself, his passenger and seriously injuring three others was driving his mother-in-law to a doctor’s appointment it has emerged.

Three cars were stopped at a red light when a Mercedes smashed into the traffic queue at a speed of 120 km/h. The speed dial was stopped at 120 km/h after the crash.

The 62-year-old driver of the Mercedes and his 85-year-old passenger were killed instantly.

The cause of the accident and why the man was driving at such excessive speeds is not yet known.

Investigations at the scene have been carried out. The wrecked Mercedes driven by the 62-year-old has been taken away for checks. These checks will take some time as the car was completely destroyed in the high speed crash.

Whether a post mortem will be carried out has not yet been announced. But it is thought a post mortem will be carried out to assess whether there was a medical reason why the driver was travelling so fast.

According to Ronald Packert from Wiener Rettung a 29-year-old was airlifted to hospital by the Christophorus 9 rescue helicopter and is in a serious condition.

A 24-year-old man and 23-year-old woman were also injured in the crash.

Police are investigating the circumstances. It is unclear why the Mercedes was travelling so fast in the city and why it crashed into the traffic queue.
