Robbers who stormed a jewellers shop on Vienna’s busy Mariahilfestrasse wielding an axe on Monday only made off with cheap watches it is reported today (Weds)
The robbers used the axe to smash open the glass jewellers cabinets in the Böhnel Jewellers before fleeing with the everyday watches.
Helga Eisenhardt, the shopes boss, said: "On the day of the robbery we had not yet put our most expensive, best goods back on display before the robbers arrived. We were planning to do it that morning."
The three robbers stormed the shop forcing the two workers and customers to lie on the floor whilst two accomplices dressed in helmets and building overalls smashed open the cabinets, and filled their bags with the jewels before fleeing - leaving their axe in the shop.
The robbers then fled in a car which had a driver waiting for them outside the shop.
They then left the car and escaped on foot. Police have yet been unable to trace them.
Police are investigating whether this gang could have been responsible for similar robberies in February and May.
