Restoration of the Jewish Cemetery in Vienna

The Jewish cemetery in Seegasse located in the 9th district of Vienna is the oldest Jewish cemetery in the capital that is still in use.

And at the moment the city of Vienna is in the process of restoring this ancient and architecturally significant location.

So far some 50 graves have been refurbished. But there are still about 349 others to renovate and it is a slow process.

For the current year officials hope to renovate another 24 graves with a budget of around 112,000 euros.

Some of the tombs were erected in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries and are of enormous artistic significance.

According to Friedrich Dahm, the authorized representative for monumental protection department, the specialists are trying to find a balance between the restoring process, while preserving the signs of the past.

The cemetery was consecrated in 1540 and encompasses approximately 2,000 square meters.

When the Jews were displaced by Emperor Leopold I in 1670, the merchant Koppel Fränkel paid 4,000 Gulden in order to preserve the cemetery.

From 1696 it was owned by the banker Samuel Oppenheimer. However in the course of the reforms by Emperor Joseph II the Jewish cemetery was abandoned completely.

During the 1940s some Jews hid the mortal remains of their ancestors at the "Zentralfriedhof" because the cemetery was defiled and destroyed by the Nazis. In 1978 the city of Vienna purchased the area.

The graves are currently being rebuilt and relocated in accordance with their original appearance and location thanks to an old layout plan from 1917. In Judaism the location of the tomb and the deceased person is crucial and needs to remain unchanged.
