Death camp guard removed from memorial list

The name of a former SS Nazi death camp guard has been removed from a book of remembrance for victims of World War II in the Austrian capital, Vienna.

Josef Vallaster - who assisted in the deaths of thousands of victims in a concentration camp - was struck from the book by Austrian defence minister Norbert Darabos at the weekend.

"Such names have no place in a decent memorial," he said.

Vallaster's name came to light when Green Party activists protested that someone who murdered so many helpless innocents should not be on a list of war victims himself.

He had died in the war during an uprising by Jewish prisoners at Sobibor death camp in 1943.
