A young bearded vulture raised at Schönbrunn zoo in Vienna is being moved to France where she will be released into the wild as part of a conservation programme.
The three-month old female bird made a brief stop at the vets on the way so that her feathers could be part painted for later identification and observation.
The bird was originally hatched at the Greifvogelstation Haringsee in Lower Austria but because she was rejected by her parents she was moved to the zoo where she was raised by two adoptive parents.
The birds had died out in the wild in Europe but a reintroduction programme started in 1986 which the zoo is enthusiastically supporting
With a wingspan of almost 3 m the orange-black bird is extremely powerful. They were principally living in the Alpine regions where they would take care of large animal carcasses. As a result they are harmless although in popular mythology they were blamed for the kidnapping of young children and lambs – and were wiped out.
Now they have been reintroduced into the Alps in Austria, France and Switzerland.
Thanks to the support of the zoos the bearded vulture is now present in the wild with about 200 birds.
Hans Frey, who is the head of the project, said that this year alone the birds in the wild have had 15 chicks.
