Quick witted pensioner escapes armed robbers

An 83-year-old pensioner has become the number one witness after a robbery in Vienna on Monday. Anna Theuerer was in the Hilton hotel when her son’s jewellery shop was raided by gangsters with guns and axes.

The robbers were completely unaware of Grandmother Anna when they robbed the Theuerer jewellery shop in the Vienna Hilton hotel at around 10.38am. The 83-year-old woman had taken up her normal position in the shop behind a partition wall and was enjoying a cup of tea when the drama took place. From her stool she was able to see everything including the first unmasked robber that entered the jeweller's.

Anna Theuerer said, "When I saw the second robber with the axe, my heart sank." The gangsters were however completely unaware of the grandmother who sat silently just behind a small wall.

The woman watched on as the robbers smashed through the glass display cabinets, pocketing the expensive goods. Moments later the 83-year-old jumped up and ran straight through the shop and out to safety. One of the armed robbers went to run after the pensioner but the speedy witness managed to flee to a nearby grocer where she raised the alarm.

"It was a spontaneous reaction, I got away easily. My son Karl was in the office. If they had known, God knows, it could have been much worse," said Anna. The robbers are thought to have made off with around 300,000 Euros in expensive watches.
