Niemetz, the insolvent manufacturer of "Schwedenbomben", is struggling to produce and deliver their product, and there has been a call for solidarity on Facebook to rescue the company.
"Schwedenbomben" happened to be sold out in many supermarkets in Austria on Monday. The company said that they would keep up their production and delivery for the moment.
On the fan page, people motivate each other to buy huge amounts of the sweet product in order to rescue the traditional company. Some users reminisce about the past: "Schwedenbomben" are a popular treat for many children. The Facebook group is gradually becoming bigger.
A Tyrolean company "Siko Solar" wanted to help Niemetz as well and bought 864 "Schwedenbomben" for its 54 employees.
Users posted recipes including "Schwedenbomben" and further products of Niemetz on the Facebook fan page. Amongst the fans are famous people such as the former ORF anchorman Gunter Tolar and head of the Austrian People’s Party (OVP) Manfred Juraczka.
The fan page has even gained international help. A page of US Austrians declared their solidarity with the Austrian supporters: "Come on, US-Austrians! Rescue "Schwedenbomben"!"
It is unknown whether the campaign is a clever marketing move of Niemetz.
Competitors such as Manner are interested in taking over the insolvent company. "Schwedenbomben" would fit into Manner’s product range. The traditional Viennese manufacturer says that plans have not been made yet as Niemetz is trying to save the company on their own.
The insolvency concerns all three companies of the Niemetz-Group. According to the creditor protection association Alpenländischer Kreditorenverband (AKV), the liabilities of the firm are five million Euros, of which three million Euros are due.
Niemetz was founded in 1890 and is the manufacturer of "Schwedenbomben", "Bombini", and the hazelnut-cream bars "Manja" and "Swedy". The products are produced in Vienna Landstrasse and sold within Austria’s borders.
