Car parking clamp down

With growing pressure on parking spaces more and more companies are turning to private firms to make sure customer car parking is not abused.

Firms provide customer car parking free in order to make it more convenient for customers but want to avoid that non-customers leave their cars there for hours making it harder for genuine customers.

In particular in Vienna where this year the amount of short-term parking zones have been increased there is a growing problem with these free parking spaces being used by noncustomers to avoid having to pay for a ticket.

In Wolfsberg in Carinthia for example these free parking spaces are available to customers for one hour only. Anybody who fails to stick to this limit is facing legal action by private firm engaged by the storekeepers to keep a check on car park space usage.

Every couple of hours the cars are photographed by the company Parkrecht and anybody who uses the car parking facilities and who was into customer or who stays too long or face a fine of up to 198 euros. Anybody who fails to pay will be taken to court.

The company's customers include big retail chains as well as petrol stations and even ASFINAG.

Austrian motoring organisation ARBÖ spokesman Thomas Jank said that while on the one hand there was a need to protect customer parking it was also necessary to make sure it was not abused people who simply wanted to cash in on an extra source of income.
