Vienna looking at boosting housing infrastructure

The city of Vienna is planning ahead for an increase in population by looking at possible improvements to the housing infrastructure in already well built up areas.

By 2030 they estimate that the population of the city would have increased from the current 1.72 million to 1.96 million which represents an annual increase of around 18,000 residents.

Experts have already warned that the housing and accommodation requirements are unlikely to be met by new building alone and it would be necessary to make sure that accommodation opportunities in the existing properties are maximised - for example through attic conversions.

The city council is currently focusing its attention is on three districts – the Ottakring, Neubau and Josefstadt regions.

By the middle of next year they hope to have established the potential for the region.

Councillor responsible for building an accommodation Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) said that the reason for the evaluation was to maximise the usage of currently built properties rather than to simply constantly fence off new building land.

But at the same time the old world charm of various sections of the city should also not be lost by development.

One of the largest new accommodation locations for the future citizens of Vienna is likely to be at the Seestadt Aspern where by 2028 some 20,000 accommodation places are being set up.

There are also plans for the new smart flats currently being planned in the city .
