Westbahnhof tops poll of train stations

A poll by the Austrian Transport Club (VCÖ) of rail passengers has voted the Viennese train station the "Westbahnhof" as the most beautiful train station in Austria this year.

For the 7th time in a row the main train station in Linz in Upper Austria won the title of the most beautiful train station in the country up until 2011.

But this year the Westbahnhof in the center of Vienna managed to push Linz back to the 2nd place.

The VCÖ campaigns for more environmentally friendly transport and better public transport and spokesman Christian Gratzer says that the Viennese train station won because of its new look - and the central location of station.

The Westbahnhof has been under massive construction since 2008 and the Austrian train association "Österreichische Bundes Bahn" (ÖBB) invested 200 million Euros in the modifications to create the new building.

Another reason for the growing popularity of the Westbahnhof station is the newly built shopping center.

Three floors and 17,000 square meters of shops have been established in the train station building since November 2011.

In third place after the Westbahnhof and the main train station in Linz came the main train station in Graz.

The least attractive train stations in Austria are the stations in Attnang Puchheim in Upper Austria followed by Bruck an der Mur in Styria and Bregenz in Vorarlberg.

The survey was taken with 15,180 passengers. The categories were amongst other things cleanness, connection to other public transportation, spaces to sit, a good information system, shopping possibilities and parking spaces.
