Austrian regional unemployment lowest in EU

New EU regional unemployment figures for 2011 show that Salzburg and Tirol have the lowest unemployment in the whole of the EU.

The figured released by the statistical office of the European Union Eurostat show that Salzburg and Tirol had an unemployment level of just 2.5 per cent in comparison to the Spanish region of Andalucía - which had the highest proportion of unemployment with 30.4 per cent.

Upper Austria with 3.2 per cent unemployment and Styria with 3.3 per cent are also in the top ten for the most employment.

Vienna has an unemployment level of 7.1 per cent, Lower Austria 4.3 per cent, Burgenland and Vorarlberg 36.6 per cent and Carinthia 3.5 per cent.

Out of the 271 EU regions, 44 regions had an unemployment rate of a maximum 4.8 per cent.
This includes 16 regions in Germany, 10 in the Netherlands, eight of the nine Austrian regions, four in Belgium, two in Italy and one in the Czech Republic, France, Romania and the UK.

On the other end of the spectrum 17 regions have an unemployment rate higher than 19.2 per cent. Ten of these regions are in Spain, four in French Overseas Departments and three in Greece.
